Just because valentine’s day is over doesn’t mean the romance has to stop!
Business is a lot like a love, it’s easy to start a business when the passions are running hot, but years later when the real work has started needing to be done and the real world realities come to bear the honeymoon can end very quickly. But we’re here to tell you it doesn’t have to – you can be in love with your business again – and we can help!
To know where you stand it’s good to take a step back from time to time and just really look at where you are. Clear your mind of your preconceptions and personal feelings and really stare into the soul of your business. This is more than just looking at the profit margins – although that is important – it’s about standing outside your personal self to gain a more clear vision of how things really are. While this is about taking off the rose colored glasses, don’t be afraid to be a little congratulatory either, after all if your business has been running well you already have something to be proud of; if it’s not you know where you need to begin.
Take Time Off
WHAT?! Aren’t I supposed to be pushing the envelop, putting in the long hard hours, sweat equity and all that jazz? Well, YEAH, you are and you should have been for some time now; that’s largely why you need to take some time away. If you’ve really been working it chances are you’re already feeling a little frazzled around the edges and this in itself can hamstring your efforts. Time away lends perspective. Time away gives you a chance to breathe and really look at things when you’re not in the middle of the swirling maelstrom that is running a successful company. The kind of fresh inspiration you may be missing simply can’t be found when you’re in the thick of things, the mind needs space to breathe in creativity as well as released stress.
If you’re really struggling, really stuck, it might be time to look for outside help. This can be as basic as talking to a trusted and successful friend or mentor, or it may even be time to consult with a professional to explore new options. A qualified consultant will be able to listen to your concerns, talk about your goals, and develop a road map for success to get you where you want to be. The old adage is true: the problem isn’t the problem, it’s how you perceive the problem. What’s more the problem often contains the solution within itself; many times just being so close to the problem at hand will keep you from seeing the solution right in front of you.
Last but not least, it might just be time to try something completely different. That’s not to say throw the baby out with the bathwater, but if after much soul searching and seeking you still aren’t finding that flame rekindled it’s time to make the hard calls. Is the business serving your goals? Is the path you’ve set before you even able to be followed, and does that path lead to success? Problems are messages; in chaos there is opportunity. Knowing when to quit is just as valid as knowing when it’s time to start, but what you’ve got to realize is that no failure is fatal – every experience holds within it the potential to push you forward – and even if it’s time to pack it in you should be taking a wealth of knowledge on how to build your dream even better.
It’s easy to get lost along the way, especially if you’re doing something truly innovative because there is no trail to follow. It takes bravery, determination and maybe just a little bit of hard-headedness to make it, but no one ever promised that success would be easily gained. Take heart, every business no matter how well conceived or executed will have it’s ups and downs, this is the nature of all things. The good news is you don’t have to do it alone! Seek out those in your personal sphere to lean on for support and know that we are always here to chat about how you can fall in love with what you do to live.
